Black Welsh Mountain sheep are a primitive breed originating from the southern mountains of Wales. Unlike the very dark brown colour of other natural “black” wools, Black Welsh Mountain wool is a true jet black or red black colour (called gwlan cochddu in Welsh). As a medium wool, Black Welsh Mountain tends to have a softer hand than other black wools, and is extremely durable, making it perfect for a variety of garments such as sweaters, hats, mittens, and slippers.
Suffolk sheep are the most common breed of sheep in North America. Known primarily as meat sheep, their wool is often overlooked, but good quality Suffolk wool can be very fun to work with! Suffolk wool is dense and bouncy, making it very well suited to cables and textured patterns with excellent stitch definition. Durable, and non-felting, it’s perfect for socks or slippers.
